Donovan leads Wisconsin over Iowa in first career start

Football Betting Lines

11/11/2006 - Iowa City, IA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tyler Donovan threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start as 16th-ranked Wisconsin edged Iowa, 24-21, in a Big Ten battle at Kinnick Stadium.

The junior quarterback was forced into action because of an injury to veteran John Stocco. Stocco missed his first start in 36 games with a right shoulder injury suffered during the fourth quarter of the Badgers' win over Penn State last week.

Donovan completed 17-of-24 passes and also had 61 yards rushing for the Badgers (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten), who have won seven straight games.

P.J. Hill ran for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Beckum and Luke Swan each caught a touchdown pass for Wisconsin.

Drew Tate connected on just 10-of-31 passes for 170 yards but did have three TD passes for the disappointing Hawkeyes (6-5, 2-5), who have lost four of their past five games.

Damian Sims rushed for 52 yards while Tony Moeaki, Tom Busch and Trey Stross all caught TD receptions.

Wisconsin jumped on top late in the opening quarter. Taylor Mehlhaff got the Badgers on the board with a 31-yard field goal with 2:47 left in the frame. Then, on the first play of Iowa's ensuing drive, Roderic Rogers picked off Tate and returned in 20 yards to the Hawkeyes 26-yard line. Two plays later, Donovan found a wide open Beckum for a three-yard TD to give the Badgers a 10-0 advantage heading to the second quarter.

Iowa responded in the second thanks to a big play from by Scott Chandler. The senior tight end found a seam in the Badgers' defense and rumbled 64 yards all the way to the down to the Wisconsin 10-yard line. Tate then finished things by hooking up with Moeaki for a four-yard score to make it a 10-7 game with 8:27 left in the half.

The Hawkeyes then took the lead, 14-10, with just 2:16 remaining before intermission when Tate capped a seven-play,69-yard march by finding Busch out of the backfield for a three-yard score.

Wisconsin wouldn't stay down for long, however. Donovan found Swan in man coverage and the receiver used his body to shield the defender, make the catch and waltz into the end zone for a 42-yard TD with just 39 seconds left in the half.

Another big play by Swan helped give the Badgers some breathing room. The receiver hauled in an underthrown ball by Donovan for a 48-yard gain down to the Iowa 13 with under a minute left in the third quarter. Hill then finished things by taking it in from a yard out to make it 24-14 with 13:50 remaining in the game.

The Hawkeyes got back in the game thanks to a big turnover. Hill fumbled on a screen play and Marcus Paschal was there to recover it at the Iowa 41. Tate capitalized on the big play by piloting a quick TD drive, culminating with a 24-yard scoring pass to Stross to make it a three-point game, 24-21, with 10:20 left.

But, the Badgers defense stiffened from there and Wisconsin managed to hold on for the win.

Game Notes

The Badgers are a gaudy 28-7 when Stocco starts. The 28 wins ranked second in the nation among active quarterbacks trailing only Boise State's Jared Zabransky...The all-time series between these two clubs is now dead even at 40-40-2...Wisconsin snapped a four-game skid against Iowa.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
